The Art of Counter Culture

Posted by Van dul on

Counter Culture is all the rage these days. It seems like every influencial artist is doing it; taking things that are considered lame and making them ironically cool. But when it comes to turning pop culture on its head, only one person is doing it right.

Enter stage left: Ye

For most of my upbringing Kanye West has been taking things that we consider worn-out, over played, unknown or hated and making them dope af. Pink polos, dad shoes, rebel flags; nothing is left untouched in the name of expression when it comes to Ye's brand image.

Looks lit af fam, I tell ya what.

After nearly two decades of his merciless rein over counter culture, a lot of us began to wonder, "Is there anything Ye can't get us to buy?" For a while it seemed like he was completely untouchable in the face of hypebois everywhere. Anything he threw at us, we loved unconditionally. His entire image was consistently unpredictable & exciting, just like the man himself. Then.....it happened.

#triggered

On October 11th, 2018, Kanye West sat down for a meeting in the oval office with Donald J. Trump. A thick red line was immediately drawn in the sand. Ye had finally gone too far. Once we entered this saga in the chronicles of Yeology, only the true die-hard fans would stick around. This fun idea of 'counter culture lmaooo' had become very personal and oddly offensive literally overnight. His reputation suddenly became dangerous at the drop of a MAGA hat, and in complete Ye fashion, he didn't stop there.

"is there still gonna be curse words in it tho?"

I loved Ye's turn to gospel with Jesus is King. I bought the vinyl, the cassette, the CD, the shirt, the hat (which I still wear frequently on bike rides), and I even had the privilege to see him preview the album live at The Forum right before the release. Young hypekids all around me were decked out in Kayne merch from his tours over the years. We all huddled around Kanye with our hands in the air, heads down, eyes closed, praising God. Some danced. Some cried. A few were still trying to rip their phones out of Yondr Pouches so they could sell the footage to TMZ when they got home. It was a magical experience I'll never forget, and probably the last concert I'll get to go to for a while.

*insert goat emoji*

All in all, Kanye has done some pretty awesome things. He's led people to God, made T Swift Famous, tried running for President kinda, and has become one of the most influencial voices in music the world has seen in a long time. This next series titled Counter Culture will be special to me, and I hope it is to you as well fam.
